Are written childminding policies and procedures necessary?

Are written childminding policies and procedures necessary?

There is much confusion over whether ofsted registered childminders require written childminding policies and procedures. One reason is because Ofsted does not produce clear guidance on this. However according to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Statutory Framework, from the Department of Education, “Childminders do not need to have written policies and procedures as evidence of complying with certain welfare requirements so long as they are not on the childcare register

As almost every registered childminder in England will be on the childcare register, childminders do need written policies and procedures covering aspects of the Welfare requirements. The 5 free childminding policies and procedures cover some of the welfare requirements but you may also need other childminding policies & procedures, for example a Fire evacuation / emergency procedure. Our site www.thechildmindingcafe.co.uk has more information on this in our ebook “Become a better EYFS Childminder”.

Also you might want to keep a close eye on the Revised EYFS which comes into force in September this year for any changes to these requirements. Again our website www.thechildmindingcafe.co.uk can keep you up-to-date on these developments.
